Emily Wood, a Thayer High sophomore, recently won $50 in a local art competition for a T-shirt design.

Friends of the Eleven Point River recently held a contest to find a logo for the organization to be featured on their website to help fund the Greer Mill Project in Oregon County. Wood created the winning design out of approximately 30 entries from students throughout the county.

When asked what inspired her design, Wood said that her dad, Tom Wood, was part of her inspiration. She said that he creates a lot of t-shirts for organizations in the area. “I grew up watching him make a career out of art on a computer,” said Wood.

When asked what she thought when she found out she won, Wood said, “I thought it was pretty cool that out of all of Oregon County, that I won. I felt pretty special.” Wood stated she did not want it to be a busy complicated design, but wanted it to be something that was cute and simple that would be able to be used on clothing and hats. Friends of the Eleven Point River will be selling the T-shirts and hats as fundraising items for the Greet Mill restoration project.

“The art and drawing/painting classes competed with each other creating a logo for Friends of the Eleven Point. Emily won with her design creating a concept that showed a stylized river and trees. I think what worked with her logo was that it was simple and eye catching while also fulfilling the requirements of the assignment,” Ms. Jana Miller, Art Instructor for Wood at THS, said.

Way to go Emily! The THS family is proud of you!
