2017 Mighty Mite Football Schedule

The Thayer Elementary Mighty Mite football teams are underway. They have started their practices and will be playing their first game Saturday, September 9th against Salem, Arkansas. They have been preparing for close to six weeks already for their first game.

There are four different age groups that play- 3rd grade with Coach Luke Martin, 4th grade with Coach Andy Mills, 5th grade with Coach Ken Cotham, and 6th grade with Coach Scotty Simer. “The Mighty Mite coaches buy the 6th graders their jerseys with their name on it and let them take them with them as a reward for participating all four years,” said Coach Simer.

Ms. Debbie Cabrales, Thayer Mighty Mite program board member, said Thayer is the only school that allows kids from different schools, and even girls, to play on the football team. There are only two girls that play out of all the grades. “There are four other schools allowed to play with us and they are Alton, Koshkonong, Mammoth, and Couch,” Cabrales said.

Thayer Mighty Mites has been around for some time. The coaches are voluntarily coaching and do not receive any form of pay and all the referees are volunteers, too. Usually they have one referee that they pay just to have a good official. All proceeds from the games go towards pictures, trophies, and jerseys for the players. Cabrales said her favorite thing about being on the Mighty Mite board is the parents. She said she enjoys watching them get excited. She says the parents think they are playing NFL and the kids need the same rules.

“I feel like we have one of the best programs around,” said Cabrales. “We are the best at preparing them for high school ball and we think that’s why they are such good high school talents.” The boys and girls will be playing four home and four away games this year. Cabrales said she hopes to have an amazing season and that everyone will come out to support the Thayer Mighty Mite program.
