In our high school library, there are some truly fascinating books. I just finished one of them, Red Queen, a novel by Victoria Aveyard. Not only was this her first novel, but it was also her first book series.

The series first begins introducing a girl by the name of Mare Barrow, born a “Red”,  and there is nothing truly out there for her, at least that is what she believes. Surrounded by war and death, that’s all her life truly is, and though she is a skilled thief, not everyone is oblivious to the tricks she has up her sleeve. Her whole life she had seen how truly horrible the “Silvers” were to the “Reds”, but she hadn’t experienced it first hand. At least not until she found herself posing as a “Silver” herself.

Later on within the first book Mare finds that she has a strange ability, one she shouldn’t have, not unless she was a “Silver”. Now the difference between “Reds” and “Silvers” isn’t just their ranking, but it is their blood. “Reds” have red blood while “Silvers” have silver blood. “Silvers” think they are superior because of their gifts,  and their ‘abilities’, but that’s not the case. Though it is more natural for “Silvers” to have abilities, “Reds” can have them as well, and that’s what landed Mare in the castle, posing as a girl by the name of Mareena Titanos,  the daughter of a long since dead Captain.

Once Mare finds herself learning more about her abilities and why she has them, while her blood is that of a “Reds”, she discovers that there are more like her, and that might just get them all killed once their names fall in the wrong hands. This is a game of life and death, deception and love, there’s no telling who will turn on you because… “Anyone can betray anyone…”
