Kelsea Martin is a first year teacher at Thayer High School. She is also a 2010 THS graduate.  Martin was the Editor-In-Chief for her school newspaper which was called the Bobcat Peptonian. She was also the secretary of student council and was a varsity cheerleader. Martin loved to read and would sometimes get in trouble for reading instead of listening to the lecture. She is very pleased to be working at her “alma mater” and said she considers herself very lucky.

Martin went to MSU West Plains where she went through a five year program to receive her bachelor’s degree in teaching. She is currently teaching English courses and is a coach of the varsity cheerleaders.

Mrs. Martin loves teaching and says her favorite part about teaching is “working with students and being able to share her love for English”. She loves to teach grades 9-12 and tries making her class enjoyable. “ I try to incorporate things that I think students will find interesting and fun in different ways,” Martin said.  For example, every Friday her classes do a “Ted-Ed” where she shows her class an educational lecture on various subjects, then she has the students journal about what they learned or how it changed their perspective on things.

Martin said her biggest pet peeve is “thoughtlessness”, whether it applies to actions or words. Her biggest fear in teaching is that she is going to make her subject boring or her students dread coming to her class.

Martin stated that all the great teachers she has had throughout her life have been the ones who have influenced her the most.

I am very blessed to work with many influential people here at THS, but my biggest role model would have to be Michelle Estes, who taught here when I was in high school. She was a fantastic teacher and influenced my life significantly.”

— Mrs. Kelsea Martin-9th and 10th Grade THS English Teacher

Martin’s biggest goal this year is to be a positive influence for her students and to teach them well.  She stated that she is pleased so far with her teaching, but there is always room for improvement.

Kelsea Martin is married to her husband Brandon of six years and they have a dog named Desmond. She loves reading, writing, and traveling.
