The Thayer Bobcats will be hosting the Miller Cardinals on Friday, Oct. 20, at the Louis Bozman Field, where they will be starting the district playoffs. District time means win or go home in Missouri, and Thayer is looking to win their district for the third straight year. Last year, Thayer went all the way to Ash Grove, and claimed the district trophy from them on their home field. This year, they will have to travel if they want a chance at the sectional game against what looks to be another Valle Catholic matchup. Thayer is ranked number three in Class 1 District 2, behind Sarcoxie (2) and Pierce City (1).

Thayer is coming off of a tough loss at Mountain Grove, where they lost a hard fought game 15-14. Thayer was leading for most of the game, but Mountain Grove took the lead in the second  half and didn’t give it up again. Thayer had a 4th and Goal in the waning minutes of the 4th quarter and were unable to put points on the board. This ultimately lost the game for the Bobcats, and brought them their second SCA loss of the season. Their only two SCA losses have been to larger schools, and this is something that the Bobcats can brag about.

Playing in the SCA has given us great experience and preparation for the postseason.”

— Dawson Russell, Thayer Bobcat Senior

Thayer is going into their district battle well prepared to win it again, because they have been in the tough SCA schedule this year. They have battled bigger and stronger teams all year long, and have faired very well against them. So going into Class 1 matchups from here on out, they are confident in their abilities to win due to the preparation the SCA has given them. “Playing in the SCA has given us great experience and preparation for the postseason, and we are confident now that we are playing against schools our size,” said Dawson Russell, a Thayer senior and the starting center.

Thayer’s first round matchup is the Miller Cardinals, who have a less than stellar record of 3-6. They have struggled this year, and going into the district tournament they were seeded sixth. Thayer’s defense should give Miller fits, and their experience against the bigger, faster, stronger teams of the SCA should help the Bobcats come out with a victory in the first round. If the Bobcats can stay healthy through the tournament, look for them to make a deep run in the Class 1 playoffs.

The Class 1 District 2 seedings look like this:

1-Pierce City (9-0)

2-Sarcoxie (8-1)

3-Thayer (6-3)

4-Marionville (6-3)

5-Ash Grove (6-3)

6-Miller (3-6)

7-Cabool (0-9)

8-Pleasant Hope (0-8)
